If you just want to play a fun game with someone, you obviously don’t need a chess clock. Personally, though, I like to use a clock even when I’m playing for fun and not rating points. That’s because the clock keeps the action moving and prevents players from taking a long time to move. I’ve seen people who were losing begin playing slowly, so their games still weren’t finished when it came time for the chess club to close. The slow players — who would have lost if the game continued — then offered a draw. This meant no one won and the slow players didn’t have to accept defeat.
